Public GIS Map Viewer: Setting Map Scale

The active map includes a scale bar located in the lower right corner. This is intended to represent what one inch of the displayed map equates to in actual distance in feet if measured on the earth. (You can verify this using the Measuring tool.)

Note that although the scale changes when you zoom in or out, it does not represent the "height" of your viewpoint and is not a vertical distance. Although setting the scale will change the zoom level, what you are actually doing is to go to the zoom level where one inch on the map will represent the specified distance in feet on the ground.

To set the scale, enter the desired scale in feet in the box provided in the upper right corner of the map window and click the Set Scale button.
